Fascination with Diamond Size |
Man’s fascination with unusually large and beautiful diamonds has long existed. The Great Mogul, one of the earliest known large stones was a famous Indian diamond of about 280 carats. It has been lost since 1665 and was believed to have been cut into smaller diamonds. The 199.6-carat Orlov which was stolen by a French soldier from an idol in an Indian Temple was believed to be part of the Great Mogul. It eventually found its way to the diamond treasury of the former Soviet Union.
The 44.5-carat Hope diamond and the 140.5-carat Regent diamond were stolen at about the same time from the French government. The Hope diamond ended up in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC while the Regent diamond was recovered and used to embellish the hilt of Napoleon’s sword. The world’s largest diamond found in South Africa is the Cullinan which weighed 3,106-carats. It was cut into 9 large gems and 96 smaller gems. The two largest gems became part of the British Crown Jewels while the remaining large gems became the personal property of the British Royal family.

A Question of Diamond Quality |
A diamond’s quality is gauged on the four Cs – carat, clarity, color and cut. Carat refers to the size thus a carat weight will refer to the mass of a diamond. Clarity refers to the clearness of the stone, whether it has inclusions or flaws. Color preferences tend to change over time but standards favor a diamond that is colorless or a very faint blue. Cut refers to how many well-proportioned facets are in the stone. A good cut is responsible for the sparkle in a diamond.
Treated diamonds or those that have been painted or had fillers made of glass inserted to make it appear clearer have greatly diminished value. Antique jewelries are endowed with an additional feature of character which cannot be true to new pieces. Such character adds quality through the fine workmanship which brings with it its own value.

Diamond Size vs. Diamond Quality |
Generally, larger diamonds cost more but the cut, clarity and color has to be considered in determining a diamond’s true value. There is a growing trend towards “Bigger is better”. Weddings are not the only ones growing in extravagance. Such occurrence is being observed in the growing size of the diamond engagement ring as well.
Women of today would like to have both – big diamond engagement rings with quality diamonds. Even the style is shifting, from the traditional one-carat solitaire to a three-stone diamond setting of three to five carats. The choice between size and quality is essentially a personal choice. The most important thing is that the engagement ring suits the wearer’s style and the couple’s budget.
