Remove your engagement ring |
Parting with your engagement ring (even for short periods of time) is often times difficult, but there are instances: when you’re going to do the laundry; are about to do house or kitchen work; work in the garden, work out in the gym or do any other hard work, when it’s better to just remove the ring and put it in a safe place. Chlorine may discolor the mounting or the band of your ring. A hard blow can chip off a part of the gem. Dough and oil can create a film around the stone and make it lose its luster.
Aside from these, everyday lotions or perfume can damage your ring. Remove the band when you’re applying these and wear it once you’re done primping yourself.

Check your engagement ring |
Just before you wear your ring, or before you tuck it in a safe place (padded and away from other jewelry), you should closely check the ring first. Look for tiny chips or scratches or even loose stones, prongs or mountings. If you notice anything amiss, refrain from trying to “repair” it yourself as you may do more harm than good. Bring the ring immediately to your jeweler and have the prongs tightened or ask how the scratches can be removed. When you’re at the jeweler, even if you trust him, please do not leave your ring unattended.
Even if your ring is in perfect condition, you still need to bring it to a jeweler for a thorough cleaning or a “professional shine-up”. This can be done once a year.

Clean your engagement ring |
After you’ve checked the ring and made sure that there are no loose prongs, you can start cleaning it. Cleaning rings is fairly easy. You may dip it in a warm, chlorine-free detergent bath; or simply soak it in a mixture of cold water and dishwashing detergent. Afterwards brush it with a soft-bristled brush. You can also purchase a liquid jewelry cleaner and dip the stones in it (just read the instructions carefully), or if you have more money to spare, you can purchase a small cleaning machine called the ultrasonic cleaner (not advisable for rings with emeralds). After brushing and rinsing it, place the ring on a piece of cotton fabric and pat it dry.
By following these simple steps, you can extend the life and beauty of your engagement ring and you would be able to enjoy it for a long period of time.
