| The Claddagh Ring |
This ring, a captivating symbol of Irish culture and sentiment got its name from the town of Claddagh where it is believed to have originated. It portrays a heart topped with a crown which is held by two hands with one hand on either side. Although frequently used as wedding bands, it is traditionally worn on the right hand with the heart turned inwards to signify that the person is “spoken for”. A married person wears it on the left hand.
The most common phrase found on the ring is “Let love and friendship reign”. However, the original known passage was “With these hands I give you my heart and I crown it with my love”. Whatever passage it comes with, the ring has become popular for what it symbolizes.

| The First Diamond Engagement Ring |
The first known diamond engagement ring was given by the Archduke Maximillian of Austria to Mary of Burgundy in 1477. This was believed to have led to the modern diamond engagement ring tradition. It cannot be definitely ascertained though that there had been no previous similar practice.
The rise of the middle class produced a shift towards the use of more affordable materials. Colored gemstones were used as alternative stones or accents for smaller sized diamonds for engagement rings. The diamond was used much later than some gemstones for jewelry in general due to the difficulty in cutting it.
