| | First, the right size. |
Such is a basic knowledge after all, who’s more familiar with her hands that the person who holds them most often? The right size refers to the ring band diameter and width as well as the stone size that proportionately fit her dainty third finger. Visualize that ring on her hand. Too small? Too big? Or just right? | | Next, the stone. | Diamonds may be the most sought after engagement ring for many centuries now. But there are other less costly alternatives out there. If you’re a couple who would rather spend that budget on your future conjugal house or car, check out other gemstones (her birthstone for instance). But if diamond it is, consider the 4 C’s – cut, color, clarity, and carat.
Cut refers to the shape (e.g. circular or brilliant cut, oval, pear, and marquise) and the craftsmanship, for it gives the diamond its distinctive glitter and brilliance. Diamonds appear colourless, but they have subtle yellow and brown tones. The more colourless a diamond is (that is, grade D diamonds), the rarer it is; those approaching grades P, Q, R, and SZ are the more yellowish types. Clarity pertains to the inclusion (rare diamonds have fewer inclusions), which can be learned using magnifications. Carat, the measure of weight (as opposed to karat, which refers to the quality of gold), is computed by dividing the number of points by 100 (for instance, a 25-point diamond has a quarter of a carat or 0.25 carats). The larger the diamond, the higher the carat, and the rarer it is.

| Finally, the overall look and quality. | whether the simple, unembellished look or the adorned type. Will the stone go with the ring band? The ring can be silver, gold, or platinum. Whichever, it has to be wear-resistant, fashionable yet practical, and of solid construction.
For added creativity and originality, you can even design that engagement ring and dictate your own specifications. That will surely wow her.
If you must blow your wallet, it better be something your girlfriend will sincerely and proudly flaunt to her friends and family. Marriage is a life-long journey of surprises, challenges, and happiness. That ring will engage you to that journey so put a lot of thought into your ring selection and her enthusiastic yes will soon follow.
