| Precious Gems – the Alternative |
One of the most common bases for choosing a particular gemstone is the birth date thus the term birth stone. Those born in January have the Garnet as their birth stone; Amethyst for February; Aquamarine for March and so on. Others would look at the physical attributes or the value of the stone.
Just like diamonds, gemstones are also graded by cut, color, clarity and carat. A gemstone’s weight is measured in carats and its dimensions measured in millimeters. The qualities of gemstone colors are hue, tone and saturation. Clarity is related to the visible inclusions and its effect on the stone’s over-all beauty and durability. The cut that enhances the stone’s natural beauty to the fullest is the most desirable. | Gem Treatments | Most of the gemstones today have been heat-treated by miners and producers to improve their appearance and value. This treatment is stable and permanent and is considered a continuation of a process started by nature. Heat treatment improves the gemstone’s color, lessens inclusions and adds to its durability to be able to withstand ordinary wear.
The jewelry industry considers this treatment acceptable. However, treatments such as fissure or fraction filling, diffusion treating and drilling in gemstones are not acceptable practices in the industry. Gemstones that have not been treated are rare and command extremely high prices.
The Preferred Gemstones | | Some of the more preferred gemstones are sapphire, emerald and ruby. The most desired attributes for sapphires are being well cut, has a minimum of inclusions and its cornflower – blue color. The finest rubies are those with an almost pure red color with a faint undertone of blue with the minimum inclusions. Emeralds are the undisputed favorites among colored gemstones. Whatever your choice, remember that the shape of the stone is as important as its type.
